The Creativity of God by AnimaxiomArt The Creativity of God by AnimaxiomArt
Paper, 15" x 30"

This is a piece entered to a contest at a local church. The theme for the contest is "Creation". My grampa, who is 89, wrote the poem that inspired the piece.

"The word tells us that through Him and for Him all things were created,
That we are as clay in the potter's hands.
What kind of potter possesses the power to change the seasons
And the subtlety to bring forth a radiant flower from the smallest bud
Or endows a fragile monarch butterfly with the instinct to travel thousands of miles
Or through the thunder and lightning of a panoramic storm brings life-giving rain?
Who blesses a humble grain of wheat by some miracle to germinate and produce a stalk with multiple grains at its head?
When planted in great numbers it produces food for thousands.
The Word tells us that the pinnacle of creation,
The baby conceived in a virgin's womb by the Holy Spirit
Died on a cross to pay for his workmanship's failures
That if we believe in Him we do not perish but are re-created by nail-scarred hands
Emerging as from a cocoon
Raptured souls finding rest beyond the river
Glorifying the triune Creator forever and ever!

--Jack L. Griffin"

Thank you very much. It is my prayer that this piece can reflect a tiny portion of God's glory and cause at least some to turn towards Him.

This is absolutely magnificent.  I love all of the layers and the spectrum of colors, and all of the spiraling forms.  It evokes both fractal designs and Art Nouveau, both of which I love.  Mucho kudos to both you and your grandfather for such an elegant collaboration.

Fantastic colors and great composition. I love the general flow, and the hands at the top are a nice addition. How did you do the hands?

Thank you, that means a lot coming from an accomplished designer, such as yourself. :D The hands were sculpted by rubbing an embossing tool over the paper on top of a foam pad. Even though they look very dimensional, they are actually quite flat and depend on shadows and layering to make them "pop".

Very clever. I thought maybe it's white plastic. The tones remind me of those optical illusions with the hollow faces which look like a 3D face is looking right at you. This: [link]

What a lovely piece and a wonderful tribute to your grandpa! What did he say/do when you showed it to him?

And I understand how you did the paper curling and folding. But how did you make the wonderful hands (and fingernails - did you apply them separately?) at the top of your picture?

Thank you! He actually lives in a different town, and came in for the awards ceremony for the contest. At that time, neither of us knew that it had won for its division. It was the first time he had ever seen the piece, and he was so happy, he had us take his picture standing with the blue ribbon. :D He's 90 now and we're continuing to make collaborations for as long as he's on earth.

The hands are made by putting the paper over a foam pad and gently sculpting it into shape with an embossing tool. The hands are several layers to get the highly 3D look, and yes, the fingernails were made separately and glued on.

Thanks again for your interest!

Thanks! Most of the tediousness went into planning it. I think I made 4 full-sized drawings of it and threw each away before I finally came up with the version you see now.
